Dr. Hannah at Dallas Theological Seminary has said something like, "Getting a doctorate is all about your ability to tolerate boredom.” I'm sure he's right, but for me it has been my ability to tolerate imperfection. The enormous pressure one feels when he is putting his whole degree into one paper can be a bit overwhelming.
The first book I wrote, Heavenly Citizenship, only got completed because I decided,
"Anything worth saying is worth saying poorly.”
In other words, even if it stinks, it's worth writing if it is worth saying. Later, on my second book, The Absolute Quickest Way to Help Your Child Change, I found out books aren't finished, they're just abandoned. This helped to, but the dissertation is beyond these because some of the brightest minds around (professors) are being invited to criticize your work!
So, getting myself to write this time came down to Lesson #2 in The Writing Course I had to keep reminding myself that there are three stages in writing:
OK...Get Help...Make it Great
Until I reminded myself that I only had to write something OK the first time, I couldn't really get going. I could make time to edit and get help from others...but, bottom line, I had to get something on paper. My only goal was just to write something that was OK; and it made all the difference.
Now, what about you? Are you wanting to do something, but can't get started? Are you trying to make it perfect? Could you just begin with doing and OK job? I mean really, what would OK look like...and... could you just do that to begin with?
I'm really confident God is not asking for perfection, since it is an absolute impossibility in this life. But, I'm also really confident that God is inviting ACTION on our part. Why not get started on that thing right now by asking yourself:
Could I first _____________ (write, make, attempt, etc.)
an OK start on _____________?
God bless,
Fred
