Some years ago I was at a major conference on the lost art of expository preaching [that means that the meaning of the passage tells the preacher what to say instead of the other way around], I was introduced to a song of some renown in the old days. The song, and maybe its title, had the refrain, "Spirit of the Living God, fall fresh on me."
I pondered it then, and I ponder it now. Doesn't it capture something we all want in Christ? A fresh burst of the Spirit's work in our lives...a fresh anointing...a fresh wind & a fresh fire?
That notwithstanding, there is a seed of death in these words; if you misunderstand them. If the Spirit needs to fall fresh upon you (this is taken from Acts 2 when the Spirit came upon the 120 at the inaugeration of the church), then doesn't it suggest that He isn't present within you?
Don't move to fast over this point. To plead with God for things you already have is to sow to doubt not to faith. Romans 8:9, as we know, tells us that if you have Christ you Have His Spirit. What might be going on in your life (or not) simply because you are seeking what you already have?
Try this prayer: THANK YOU Spirit of the Living God, FOR falling fresh on me. He said he would never leave you or forsake you and that His Spirit would be with you for ever. Perhaps you are just a simple act of faith...or...a simple THANK YOU away from something wonderful and dramatic.
The always-leading Spirit is clearly ready...and every step we follow is a fresh step into the future with Him. Now go ahead and yield to Him---He isn't confused at all about what God wants next from you!
Grace,
Fred
