So what's this Writing Course all about?

The Writing Course is a course, or curriculum, that we designed especially with homeschoolers in mind. Of course, any self-learner is a homeschooler at heart. Basically we've been homeschooling for about twenty years, and what we discovered was that nobody really has anything out there that explains writing in a comprehensive way. By comprehensive I mean punctuation, grammar, and spelling; but also, how do you come up with ideas and make your writing interesting? And, how do you help a child learn to teach him or herself how to write?

Basically we began developing The Writing Course by tutoring children in our home. We might have classes of ten or twelve kids and go through the process of clarifying these principles and teaching them how to use them. Of course, this included the feedback process for each of these students. Well, needless to say the results were quite encouraging as we saw kids really ‘catch on’ to writing and get excited about it as well. I must confess I kind of have a secret agenda…that Christians will actually learn to be the better writers in the future, so they will continue or grow in their influence for Christ and His eternity. From there enough people got interested in the writing material I had developed such that we began to offer a public seminar. Basically we taped the seminar, edited the information, and created the Course.

Specifically what the Course involves is the audios of the training that we've done publicly for these many years. It also includes a full transcript of The Course so you can read it or search through it for more specific details concerning any of the principles on writing. From there we added a workbook, and I must say, I really like this workbook because it's designed such that a student can reuse it; meaning you print it out, you use it one time (let's say for your fourteen-year-old), and the lessons and exercises are such that they will be unique to where you are at that age. Next, you’ll print out a new workbook when you're fifteen and go through The Course again for the next year of school; in that process, at fifteen as a different level writer, the workbook in terms of the exercises will turn out completely different. In other words, The Writing Course actually grows with you.

Over time we realized that there was one piece missing, and that is we had nothing in our material about essays. So, as a result, we created a course that explains everything I wish I had known when I started college…that is, everything about what in the world a teacher is looking for concerning essays. Both of these courses, which form a unit, are built around a fundamental principle, which I capture in the phrase, “It's really hard to think straight and walk crooked.”

Most curricula and courses out there tend to try to teach you a paint-by-numbers approach, rather than helping you gain perspective.

By gaining perspective I mean that when you can think properly about writing, and essays, and grammar, and punctuation, and spelling, etc., you actually have the tool in place to continue to grow and develop as a writer. This isn't a course of simple mechanics, which pretty much all current courses are, this is a course about mechanics and philosophy, or I'd rather say wisdom for writing. Basically, The Writing Course with The Essay Course gives you what you need as either a supplement or a full curriculum, to continue year-in-and-year-out to grow your children as writers.

In fact, we've found that about the third time through the material is when the child begins to “get it into his or her bones.”

Probably the most rewarding by-product is the number of parents who are sharing the fact that they too are improving as writers. Frankly I think that's the coolest thing about homeschooling---it's really two generations that get educated; not only the kids but the parents too.
